Escapism, lack of mourning, even general emotional coldness — these were observed by contemporaries describing Germany after 1945. The traumatized population was in search of normality, consistently blocking out the experiences of war and the Nazi dictatorship. To musically and literarily gather something that could delve into and listen to that distant, still closed and silent time — while at the same time creating an emotional connection to the here and now — was the aim of conductor Christoph-Maria Wagner, narrator Olaf Reitz, and the E-MEX Ensemble. On October 26, 2023, they presented the opening evening of the new music forum “In the German Postwar Period.” For this occasion, Eres Holz composed a monumental ensemble piece reflecting the psychoses of former Wehrmacht soldiers.

New CDs of new music, presented by Dirk Wieschollek
Hardly any other composer currently reflects the horrors of the present as intensely as the Israeli-born composer Eres Holz. One will search in vain for superficial content or political messages. Everything existential is directly transformed by Holz into the sphere of sound and its articulations.

In this episode, Mathis and Valeska trace the footsteps of music in times of war and talk with Eres Holz and Ehsan Khatibi.

Composers and Their Audience in the Echo Chamber of War and Violence
„I think every human being must, in some way, bring humanity back into the discussion as a topic. And that, please, also in the contemporary music scene. We cannot continue isolating ourselves with experiments.“
